Armstrong's going to farm.

Can't understand the reason Professor Armstrong (Paul Newman) went to the farm. It did not seem necessary and put people in harm's way.

As I recall, it was to get information from the "farmer" about how to make his escape with Andrews from East Germany -- once he had obtained the secret formula from the professor. Newman was told about "Pi" and the escape bus, and contacts to be met along the way to freedom.

However, from the POV of "Hitchcock the Storyteller," this is the moment that the AUDIENCE learns that Paul Newman is not a defector at all, and that he is on a mission(originated by himself) to get that formula, with Andrews along as an unplanned complication.
