Is this movie a joke?

Oh my god, where do I start.

This was horrible and hillarious. Paul Newman is confused all the time. He doesnt really know what his character is supposed to do. Neither do we. And i believe neither does Hitchok.

So he is the worst spy ever (he couldnt even mislead his not very smart fiance)-first he goes to that farm like retard, like just the fact he is escaping his bodyguard wouldnt be suspitious enough...like there were bo better ways to get in contact with PI.

And PI... with brilliant spyes such as the doctor lady who comes to the dance where Paul smoothly jumps of his chair to dance with her after which she leaves (she came to the dance obviously just to dance with Paul for 5 min and leave-no one would find it suspitious although Paul was under survailance).

Then thank god he was lucky enough for professor to tell him all cause he def wasnt eiter subtle or clever with his methods.
Which was of course also brilliant. Since i guess no one wanted to bother to make any sort of theoretical background to what actually they are talking about professor and Newman are playing a game "confuse the viewer" and communicate trough some endless equasions. Paul Newman here is a bad student who cant balance the equasion so angry professor has to wipe off random numbers he writes obviously seeing this guy wont pass his physics.

Luckily professor explains it all and stunned Newman is trying to memorise the equasion obviously not having a clue what it means, but finding it "brilliant".

Then whole university looks for him but Paul turns his head few times and changes direction of moving and of course no one notices him.

They lead him to the bus and im already wondering why the hell they dont hide him and Julie in the luggage department or sth but no need since german army simply walks in, takes a look around and leaves, fooled by the brilliand disguises they had (Julies scarf and Pauls black jacket).

I wont even ask what the point is of bus full of passingers to take people from Leipzig to east Berlin, and how many cases are there other than this where someone has to escape from one part of east Germany to other...ok.

Or whats actually point of PI and why they risk so much to drag Paul and Julie around in the movie so they escape.

Then they walk out of bus that followed army, get recognized by random lady on the street cause they are all over news but of course no one else, and escape to the boat.

Now the purpose of the lady is non existant-i assume to show how hard it was for people in east germany but it all looks so pathetic its hillarious. I was embarassed for her character.
Completely unnecessary watching her terrible acting while Newman and Julie looked at her confused.

Then them making a hysteria in a movie theatre cause yes, people get crazy if someone yells "Fire" regardless that in the room was no smoke or anything.

Ok, so they escape, no one cares really, besides they get wet so i assume paper with the equasion is ruined and i highly doubt Paul Newman memorized it judging by how he looked at that board as the professor was writing.

Thats the story.

Characters are also terrible. PAul is always confused, Julie belongs to some other movie and wonders what shes doing here.

Their relationships is unbeliavable and we get no connection from them. So shes a smart scientist too but she cant know his complex mission.. If his motive is not to put her in danger we certainly dont get that.

And she? Cries when she thinks he isnt a patriot and then when he tells her he is American spy she gets estatic, like who cares he tells her only when he needs her help, why would she be upset.

So individually they are blah, as a couple they are blah, and really i dont see why anyone would care if the evil east germans got them or not.

Also Julie Andrews ugly costumes and terrible hair was very distracting. Shes good looking but it seems they tried to make her look as ugly as possible. I believe Hitchok hated her.

They could have easily taken anyone for those roles since they dont realy require acting but moving around.

Julie Andrews did better job escaping from Germans in The Sound of Music. Maybe if she and Paul had some duet here....

Yea so as you see im very disappointed and i had to vent. Now i feel better.

Haha, i just read your review. Yes, I completely forgot to mention the omnipresent bellerina, good one!

Also, the fact that if people already tried escaping by hiding in the boxes on ship, why werent the boxes checked or sometihing?

Maybe we should look at Paul Newman in this movie as Forrest Gump- a simple man, with simple mind, who with some amazing luck and coincidence, and help of some some people with incredibly altruistic good will (cause yes tons of germans will risk all to help some two americans in a society where people would tell on their parents if they seemed to be traitors to the system) manages what so many tried and failed-escape from east germany.

As for Hitchok, I dont know. I got recently tons of Hitchok dvd-s to watch. So now im watching them and judging them individually.

I saw Psycho first (of course i watched it before, I totally remember the impression it left on me as a kid) and I really really love that movie. I think its a brilliant thriller.

Birds were really entertaining.

Then Marnie, which has its flaws (but they arent coming from complete lack of logic as in here), but i found it still pretty interesting to watch.

The Rope I really liked.

This movie...well you can see.

So ill keep watching when i have time and judging the movies individually. Then Ill see what i think of Hitchok generally.

Yeah well why not declare Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese B-movie directors as well while you´re at it.

I do however largely agree on Torn Curtain - it comes off so clumsy, awkward and colorless as to make you wonder if it wasn´t secretly ghost directed by some garden variety Hitchcock imitator. Everything sort of seems to be there on a superficial look, but is just off in a weird way and nothing gels. Same story with Topaz.
