Who would you have cast...

...instead of Newman and Andrews, if given the oppurtunity?

I'd have gone for Christopher Plummer and Audrey Hepburn

Hitchcock wanted Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Honest. Sound familiar?

He'd always wanted to work with Audrey Hepburn, but she burned him on a movie called "No Bail for the Judge" (she quit it, he dropped it) and he vowed to never work with her again, even turning down the chance to direct "Wait Until Dark" on loan-out from Universal to Warners.

But for fantasy sake, yeah, I'll go with Audrey Hepburn.

For the man:

Rock Hudson (Hitch wanted him for Marnie, he was a top star for awhile and quite good really) OR

(Here's my surprise): Jack Lemmon. Yes. Jack Lemmon. He could handle drama even back then ("Days of Wine and Roses") and I think he would have been devastating in the killing-of-Gromek scene. A "regular guy having to kill someone."

However, here's another choice:

Paul Newman.

Newman gets bad notices for this film, but when he made "Torn Curtain," Newman was THE top male star in Hollywood. McQueen was close to catching up, and Connery had a following. But Newman was the "main man," and I still think its great to have him in a Hitchocck picture, "behaving himself" in a period in which he often mugged and goofed for the camera. Hitchcock made him grow up (the Gromek scene.)
