What made Hitchcock hate directing this film?

According to the trivia section this directing job was one of the worst Hitch ever experienced. Why?

Hitchcock didn't want Paul Newman and Julie Andrews for the leading roles. He wanted Anthony Perkins as the leading man and Eva Marie Saint for the leading role. But the studio insisted to cast Paul Newman and Julie Andrews. And Hitchcock didn't enjoy working with Paul Newman. Hitchcock also disliked the salary demands of 2 leading stars.

Hitchcock wanted to rewrite the script. But he couldn't do it, because of the limited availability of Julie Andrews. And the ending Hitchcock wanted wasn't used. According to Wolfgang Kieling (who played Gromek), Paul Newman wanted Gromek's brother scene to be cut. Because of Newman's insistence, the scene was cut.

Bernard Herrmann:

Also, Hitchcock rejected Herrmann's music for the film because he wanted a more appropiate score with a "Pop" influence. That's what ended the collaboration between the two. Herrmann told Hitchcock "I don't do Pop Music".

"SG"

That was a mistake on Herrmann's part, though.

Seriously? Anthony Perkins and Eva Marie Saint in the lead roles would have made this film 10 times better. Shame it didn't happen that way.

Possible . . . though the problem is in the script . . . they'd be stuck with the same story . . .
