Anyone else have a problem with...? (spoiler)

Am I the only one who had a problem with Willie's prologue where she constantly refers to Alva in the past tense and says that she "inherited" all of Alva's things? I would've enjoyed the film much more if I didn't know from the very start that Alva dies. I know Tennessee Williams never had happy endings but why blow the ending in the first 5 minutes of the film?

I really don't think that dialogue gives away the ending. That's the kind of talk that often refers to an older sibling who has moved away and/or outgrown various items. A bigger hint during the film involves Alva having trouble catching her breath.

After watching the beginning, I assumed that Alva just left town and that is how Willie got her things. I wasn't taking much notice of her saying "inherited" to mean dying. But it made sense in the end.
