The ending was too rushed.

The movie wasn't bad until the ending which was far too rushed. So many unanswered questions. It said Alva died but where did she go and how long after running away from Owen did she die? Why was Willie all alone?( I suspect the mother didn't care anymore but I'm not sure) And many others

I love the movie, but I agree about the ending. It was too rushed.

According to the play, the mother supposedly died. (In the movie, it seems Willie was abandoned.) Then it was just Willie and Alva until Alva got sick with TB and died after a brief illness. I assume, in the movie, Alva's running out into the rain was the trigger that activated the disease. They should have gave more signs throughout the movie that Alva will sick.

Yes, I agree. Love the Wood/Redford/Bronson mix, but why end so abruptly? It could have gone on for another hour to develop the ending and probably would be considered a true classic. But I guess even though this was the '60s, it was a studio controlled film and probably went over budget, so nothing left to continue. Just a guess.

For who would bear the whips and scorns of Hollywood... (;-p)

The ending is extremely abrupt and slightly spoils what is otherwise an entertaining film. It just feels like the writers didn't know how to conclude the story.
