The New Matt Helm?

What do you want to see in the new Matt Helm film?

I would like them to stick closer to the books. The Dean Martin movies are not quite what I thought they were going to be when I caught them on TV. I was very disapointed :(

This is an old thread, so I don't know if anyone will ever read my reply, but the subject caught my eye. This topic came up recently in a conversation over cocktails with friends. Quentin Tarantino once said in an interview that he would like to direct a James Bond movie. I don't know how likely it would be that would ever happen, but it got me started thinking he would be a great person to revive the Matt Helm franchise. This of course led to discussion of who would play Helm. One person that came up was Russell Crowe. After a few more drinks, we thought of (don't laugh) Justin Timberlake, who has turned out to be a much more credible actor than I would have imagined.

Thoughts anyone?

Yeah, nobody can. Your answer is as short as it is precise and correct. :-) Crowe and Timberlake are pussies compared to Dino.

I in no way intended to insinuate that anyone could replace Deano. I just think he may be a little difficult to get.

Yes, unfortunately. :-(

But it´s a general "problem", there aren´t actors around anymore like in the 70ies. Most try to be "politically correct" (that´s what Dino certainly wasn´t), you may hardly make jokes on women and minorities (I know, women are no minority ...) and the try to revive the franchise (= 3 Austin Powers movies with or by Mike Meyers) has moreless failed (at least in my eyes), although they did make lotta money.

Sure, Tarantino would have most likely done a better job, but still ...

The MATT HELM-movies were never masterpieces, but what lifts them up to watchability is Dino, great music, the gorgous women and the careless late 60ies atmosphere. All that can´t be redone anymore (it would look synthetical and forced today, like the Austin Powers franchise does). Let´s stick to the originals. :-))

BTW, that´s how DINO will life forever: in his music and in his movies. :-))

:-)))) Thanx !!!

I really think Dino is/was a cool guy, but there´s no way to claim that these 4 movies are among the best ever made, haha !

Watchable with a beer or two, IF one is a Dino fan, otherwise it is probably better to stay away. I love Dino, watching gorgous women, good jazzy soundtrack music, so that´s why I like them to some extent. :-))

We need swave actors to play MATT HELM.But we don't have to many of these actors today in Hollywood. We need someone withs style and cool and I don't see anyone that can match DINO cool to the end thoughs singer/actor are dead.We need someone who's a throw back to the 70's kind of cool actors today are so into being the charater the forget how to be cool like DINO back in the day.And todays actresses don't have that sexy style of the 70's sexy cool chick. If the get Steve Carrell ok that might work,if they get Jim Carrey no that won't work.

^^That's why I love them.

I think the asumption here is that a remake would be a campy, comedic spoof like the Dean Martin films were like. The films were almost nothing like the books.

The only way to restart the franchise would be to start over and stick closer to the source material. There are 27 published books to choose from.

Rickeybobby........... You're right in one respect. It more than likely would fail to reach the heights of the 60s genre success. It would be capable of having success by being closer to Hamilton's [author] original text/plot and some humorous references to the previous attempt in the original " The Silencers". Remember, the movie in one of they're releases claimed in the credits at the end of the movie, that it was based on the books both "The Silencers" and "Death of a Citizen". And if you've read both you can see where they cherry pick scenes from both. In the book the "The Silencers" Matt Helm through a knife and kills a stripper in Mexico. In the movie Sarita, the exotic dancer is killed by "Big O" with a gun. You know, they cherry pick the scenes and after it doesn't even resemble the frickin novel. But like you said. Dino's singing good, hot chicks, funny lines, etc. I liked it and would support the right kind of re-make.

It could be pulled off. I remember back in the 70s when Roger Moore took over for Sean Connery. Everyone was saying no way. "you mean you're replacing macho manly Sean Connery with this wimpy male model type. No way." The key is don't get a singer and try to make the quazi musical of the original keep the humorous little remarks and such, and perhaps play some similar era music, maybe even some of dino's stuff, maybe making it the same era [mid-60s]. Git all those little bugaboos taken care of and then worrying about who's right for the role won't be a problem. It by then will be obvious whoever it would be. Just don't cut out the hot opening scene with the babes, the hot bad chic with the dagger, some of the sexy chics dancing and such, and by all means please include the reverse gun. That was a hoot.
