I watched the full uncut version on PBS. What a great movie this was.

I know I had 'kind of' watched it before on TV (with commercials and cuts) but seeing it last night in it's full 3 hour version with no commercials on a large flat screen was fantastic.

Steve McQueen was fantastic is his underplaying of his character. It seemed as though he held something back in nearly every scene, improving his character.

I'm a huge fan of the 'Master and Commander' movie and watching this reminded me in many ways of that movie.

I'm glad I stayed tuned and saw the entire movie this time.

I saw it on PBS too last night. its one of my all time favorite movies (and the book is favorite books.) I've got it on DVD as well. it has the roadhouse version on it as well as the 3 hour version. the roadhouse version has about/around 20 minutes added to the movie.

Ha! I wasn't the only one. I had never heard of the film and was channel surfing when I came across this starting. Being a lover of old films and trusting PBS' taste, I left this on and settled in. Lucky me! Absolutely outstanding. And since the second poster here mentioned the books, I'll have to check that out now. Just a wonderful movie from so many angles; acting, directing, character building(<the real gem), and then the cinematography of the on-location sets.

Actually it just a book. when I said books I meant it to mean that "in all of the books that I have read & enjoyed in my life so far, this is one of my favorites." sorry for any confusion. Anyway. I think you would really enjoy it. its by a man named Richard McKenna (not to be confused with Richard Crenna the actor who was Collins in the movie - who apparently - a lot of people think he wrote the book. I bet he wished he wrote it.) it may be hard to find the only new copies I can find of it is on Amazon & Barnes & Noble and all the have is a textbook version of it. I really don't know what that might mean. the copy I have I found when I was about 12 yrs. old in my family's basement.

Terrific book. Very intense and much better than the movie, which is still one of my favorites.
