whats up with this click sound?

every time something dramatic is about to happen there is this strange and ridiculous click sound

This confused me at first, but I eventually figured it was part of Mario Nascimbene's score. It didn't really work, for the most part, as it was hard to tell whether it was a sound effect or music.

To me it always had the sound of rocks being knocked together -- as in "the stone age".
