Anyone know what kind of rifle Max had in the beginning?

Yeah, and why didn't he keep the rifle?

I think it was a German "Jaeger" rifle, with more than one barrel- possibly a rifle/shotgun combination. He didn't keep it because the saddle tramps whose horses he tried to steal stole it from him.

He wasn't trying to steal the horses--he was setting them loose so the men he thought killed his parents couldn't get away.
