Steve McQueen's service to White House

A lot of people don't realize this but Steve McQueen saved a few lives during his service in the US Navy. He ended up as one of the Honor Guards to Harry Truman at the White House.

This information can be found at one of his many websites!

It's true, except he was in the marines not the navy.

The Marines are the men's department of the navy.
He was such a rebel you would think that he wore his uniform inside out.

That's a new one...

Steve McQueen was in the Marine Corps, in an armored (tank) unit. No McQueen biography (and there are several) that I'm aware of ever mentioned anything about him being in a White House honor guard.

'McQueen' by Christopher Sandford (bloody good read!) tells that he drove tanks at Camp Lejeune whilst 'in training' for a tank repair post for a while - spending much of his time there in the brig. It was at the arsenal at Quantico that he got his first of seven demotions. At Lake Melville, he single-handedly saved the lives of several men, when a boat capsized into -30c degree water. A few men also died in the first recovery craft that went out to offer assistance - & also capsized.

In his time as a Marine, McQueen became a member of the guard for Harry Truman's yacht, The Sequoia. The book states that he probably spoke to Truman, "as he would to four of his successors" - so he personally met at least _five_ Presidents.
