Was there ever a different ending?

My memory may be playing tricks on me, as it has countless other times, but I seem to remember seeing once, years ago, a final shot just after he rides away from Karl Malden: a long shot of him riding into the Indian Village he had left those many years ago. My father and my brother both seem to remember this too. Are we having some sort of mass delusion or are we confusing it with the end of another film?

I do not remember ever seeing the movie end with him riding toward the Indian village.

I did see him grab a motorcycle and try to jump into Switzerland.

The Indian Village is only about a half mile from the final shot. But to get there, he should be riding downstream.

I saw an alternative ending whereby he jumped into a Mustang, not on a Mustang, and drove into S.F. to join the police force..
