Scofield Sucks...

And Richard Burton Rules. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is the superior film. I felt a thread needed to be created since MovieMania7 hasn't created one in 2.5 years!

And Richard Burton Rules.

Btw, you know you and Mr. Scofield agreed on that. The latter stayed home the day of the Awards. Why? Well he figured Richard had it bagged. It sure looked like good things happen to actors who stay at home!

After "A Man for All Seasons" aired yesterday on TCM 31 Days of Oscar, the Host, Ben Mankiewicz, mentioned that Richard Burton stayed at home, instead of attending the Oscar ceremony, as he believed that his Best Actor nominated performance for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" would lose to Paul Scofield. Now on this thread, it is also mentioned that Paul Scofield stayed at home, since he believed that he would lose to Richard Burton. So it turns out that at least in their eyes, they were both worthy of the Oscar.

Additionally, the host mentioned, that Richard Burton convinced his wife, at the time, Elizabeth Taylor, who was nominated for Best Actress for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" to also stay at home. As it turns out, she won her 2nd Oscar.

Wendy Hiller, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for "A Man for All Seasons", but lost to Sandy Dennis for "Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf" did accept the Best Actor Oscar for Paul Scofield.

IMDd Trivia also reports that director, Fred Zinnerman withdrew from directing "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" to direct "A Man for All Seasons" and ironically beat out Mike Nichols for the Best Director Oscar.
