Just before Barbara Ann whispered something in Alan’s ear, she started telling him about a discussion group that Phil and his wife Butch have for girls every Thursday night. I figured that with a name like “Butch,” the wife was a lesbian. Since that was still pretty much a taboo subject for the movies in 1966, what Butch was doing with the some of the girls had to be whispered. As for Sally Grace’s pregnancy, even if Phil and Sally Grace were having sex, Barbara Ann would not have had to whisper it, because hypocrite preachers committing adultery had been acceptable in the movies for a long time, as in Rain (1932).
