Italian-style comedy?
Why does this film fall into the "Commedia all'italiana" genre in Wikipedia? It's a pretty sad movie.

Because Wikipedia is wrong, that's why. Pietrangeli has mostly done comedy before this film for sure but this simply does not fall in that category; 'drama', as IMDb points out too, is the most fitting genre.
