Ice in the sink

In the credit sequence Harper/Newman fills his sink with ice and water and immerses his face in it---and his character in The Sting does the same thing in his first scene in that film...

I think I read once where that's a Newman move (not a Harper thing). He did that daily, I believe.

I thought it was a cure for hangover? Harper strikes me as a man who would booze up every night, have the tv as company, and fall asleep in a drunken unconsciousness, every single night.

I'm dying to see a movie where one of the characters DOESN'T wash or splash their face with water. Is it a mandatory union contract kind of thing? I watch movies now simply waiting for the face splash scene.
