How did Harper get wind of the Temple?

I'm answereing your question only a year later, but... early in the movie, when Harper first meets and confers with Mrs. Sampson (Lauren Bacall) to learn more about the case, she was telling him about some of the eccentric tendencies of her missing husband. Among the things she mentioned, was that he had given away an entire mountain to a religious cult - this was in fact the Temple, headed by Strother Martin's character, that we see a bit later in the film.
Thanks very much for the explanation. I was wondering that too. This film takes a lot of sharp twists and turns, and it's easy to get lost if you don't give it the attention it deserves. I guess I'm guilty of that.
