Just a Seven rating?
I don't get just a Seven... not that it should be an 8, 9 or 10... but 7 is not the number for this film. The cast alone is a seven without the performances. Every actor seems to be a hyper-personification of their acting extremes. Shelley Winters laying it all out as a drunken slob, her husband's venomous hatred for her, Paul Newman's reckless driving and at the same time delivering these monotone, disinterested lines, Lauren Bacall? - she makes Mrs. Robinson look like Carol Brady. Janet Leigh couldn't be more desperately internal. Robert Wagner, Arthur Hill, Strother "Warm beans and a bed" Martin: every character is a whack-job. The films reminds me of what you would get if you combined Le Samourai with a Gidget movie.
