It's true! Martin Ritt at a retrospective on our campus said that he was amused by Newman doing that each day. I believe he said that Cicely Tyson tried it. Every time I see those scenes, I recall those days with the amazing Mr. Ritt, who worked with Newman a number of times.
As I recall, the director had just finished "Casey's Shadow" and was gearing up for "Norma Rae". Who knew then what a hit that next film would be?!
