vs The Big Sleep

It's not as good is it ?

reply

I don't know. I haven't see Harper, but The Big Sleep is pretty damned good.

reply

Well it´s better than the 1978 version of The Big Sleep. Not even close to Hawks´s 1946 film though.

reply

No way. Not in the same league.

reply

I think this film is more comparable with The Long Goodbye, but all three are great films.

reply

Yea its OK for the time period depicted.

reply

Is it as good? No, but it's a very good film if I do say so myself. Newman was a riot as Harper

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

reply

I lean towards thinking it's better. Certainly, it wasn't as groundbreaking, but the plot makes a hell of a lot more sense, and Newman is a better actor than Bogart in my opinion.

I don't recall that we got many "private eye" films in the 60's. James Bond had launched a big "spy film period."

Though Blake Edwards brought back Craig Stevens to the big screen as Peter Gunn in "Gunn" around the same time.

Anyway, Paul Newman was the biggest star playing a private eye in the 60's. Harper had the biggest and best cast.

Edging in at the end of the decade and the start of a new one: Rod Taylor was a two-fisted Travis McGee in 1970's "Darker Than Amber." Great fight scene at climax with Big Psycho William Smith.
