Who would you cast today? (Based on William Goldman's commentary)

He makes some fantastic points about the differences between the different eras of Hollywood and why there was a change in each era, be it genre, budget, casting, score, etc. Just a wonderful commentary track. but I gotta ask, because Goldman asked, who could play Harper today? What contemporary actor? He went through the usual suspects and made great points about why guys like Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, etc. couldn't work in this role.

I love this movie, we're missing the private eye genre so I'm wondering who could play this role today?

The only ones I could think of would be Matt Damon (but he doesn't have the right look for a P.I.), Joseph Gordon Levitt (still too young), Johnny Depp (possibly, but he might be too dark/quirky), Brad Pitt (bingo) he might be too old now, but if you gave him a nice dye job and decent make up, he'd be a half-decent modern substitute for Newman.

My version is leaning towards the light comedy touch of Oceans Eleven. Not because it only is convenient, but because I think it would work perfectly. Soderberg to direct. The usual suspects in the roles.

George Clooney as Lew Harper.

Julia Roberts as ex-wife Susan Harper.

Matt Damon would be the obvious choice for pilot Allan Taggert, then.

Andy Garcia as lawyer friend Albert Graves.

Elliot Gould as (mostly absent) Mr Sampson.

Kathleen Turner as Mrs Sampson. If she's too much, Meryl Streep would also work.

Lindsey Lohan as Miranda Sampson.

Brad Pitt as Dwight Troy.

Kim Cattrall as Fay Estabrook.

Maggie Gyllenhaal as drug addict cum singer Betty Fraley.

Upon first seeing that list, it'd seem like lazy casting (just because of how we're used to seeing many of these people on screen together) but upon further consideration, that's a very solid list. The only one who I sort of have a problem with is Andy Garcia as Albert Graves. I feel like you'd need a softer, friendlier actor in that role. Andy Garcia almost has too much gravitas for that character. What about Michael Keaton?

Michael Keaton would work, definitely. He worked with Steven Soderbergh in Out of Sight, together with Clooney. I thought of that film as a sort of template for this film, it's an underrated comedy noir thriller. I only cast Garcia in that role because I wanted as much of the Oceans 11-13 cast as possible. Because they seem like a fun bunch, and they seem to have fun working together. If anybody outside that gang was needed, they had to have been working with some of them before, and obviously liked working with them. Chemistry is everything. So, yes, Keaton would work.

When I thought about it, I thought that it's either Andy Garcia or Brad Pitt as Albert Graves. And the other one for Dwight Troy. I just thought Pitt would do the Troy part better, so I cast him in that role. I have never really liked Garcia as an actor to begin with, so he's difficult to cast. So, it's either Pitt, Garcia or Keaton as Albert Graves, and Pitt or Garcia as Dwight Troy. If Keaton plays Graves, and Pitt plays Troy, then Garcia is out of this picture? Because I can't find another part for him.

While we're at it, I want to throw in Casey Affleck and Scott Caan as strong arm muscle. And Elliot Gould would be absolutely hilarious as new age hippie con artist Claude. We could switch him for Carl Reiner as Mr Sampson. Is that part even cast at all in the original? The only one I have problems with from the Oceans Eleven cast is Don Cheadle. I don't seem to be able to throw him in anywhere. The sheriffs part? Or is that just reaching too much just because?

The hardest part to cast is Fay Estabrook. Because Shelley Winters could distance herself far enough to play a sultry has-been with enough dignity to be watchable, and I don't think any of todays actors has enough courage or self awareness to take the risk. Shelley Winters was big in her prime, so the actress has to have been big in the 80's-90's, but now become a has-been. Meg Ryan or Jodie Foster? None of them have humor enough.

Sharon Stone, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kim Basinger, they're all too good looking, I don't think they could play it down. Or up. Frances McDormand, maybe. Kim Cattrall would actually work, if she had the guts to play low status. And the actress must still be attractive enough to go with either Pitt or Garcia. I think Cattrall would be perfect, though it really is a difficult part to cast.

For Fay Estabrook I'd go with Susan Sarandon or Kathy Bates. And the reason you can't place Don Cheadle is that there were no roles for black people and most of the roles were in fact old white men. If Cheadle fits any role in Harper, it's the man himself- Harper! He'd be an okay re-imagining of the character. Clooney would make a good Harper, but I think you'd need someone with a little less maturity. Pitt would make for a great Harper, though he's probably too old for the role at this point.

I don't think it'd be a terrible idea either if you were to switch out some of the name actors for lesser knowns. For instance, John Michael Higgins would be an inspired choice for Albert Graves. Scott Caan is an interesting choice for Troy, but his muscular physique wouldn't work for a character that is a wanna-be bad ass.

Perhaps someone like Barry Pepper for Troy? I like that, actually. I honestly just thought of it. Pepper is under utilized.

Quite hard to cast Harper - how about someone like James Russo or Matthew McCanughey - who actually looks a bit like Paul N? Don't think Kathy Bates would make a very good Fay - she lacks the ruined sexiness. She might make a good Mrs Sampson though as would Kathleen Turner. Re Fay - how about someone like Meg Tilly, Sharon Stone, Kathleen Turner (again)? Think Lindsey Lohan would be great as Sampson's spoiled slutty daughter (give her a few more years and she'll be in the running for Fay!

reply

Meg Tilly would definitely work as Fay. But even better would her sister do, Jennifer Tilly. She played a similar role in Woody Allens Bullets over Broadway. Absolutely priceless.

reply

Sorry, you're right - should have been Jennifer Tilly rather than Meg

reply

Either way, it's a brilliant work of casting. Would've never thought about it without you.

reply

If they'd remade it in the mid to late 80s they could have had Pamela Tiffin as Fay as her career almost exactly duplicates it. Today? Maybe Brigit Nielsen or Kathleen Turner...

reply

Lindsay Lohan would make a great Fay! Jesus, aside from the 98 personal assistants, she's already Fay on the evidence of that reality TV show she stupidly signed up for!

reply

Oh, God, the "WHOM would you cast today" scenario is so boring......

reply

I think many of the suggestions offered, while excellent actors, are just too old for their respective roles. Also not EVERY part has to be an A-lister.

My thoughts:

Lew Harper - Colin Farrel
Mrs Sampson - Sharon Stone
Alber Graves - Philip Seymour Hoffman
Betty Fraley - Laura Cayouette
Allan Taggert - Channing Tatum

i seriously doubt that now

I would cast myself. 

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

A relatively unknown (at least in the US) Irish actor Aidan Turner as Harper. He's talented, good looking, plays outsiders, drama with a flair for comedy and can turn from affable to dangerous in a blink of an eye.
