beginning of the movie question

It's probably been 30 years since I've seen this. Is Grand Prix the movie that starts with a close up of the tailpipe and the sound of the fuel pump followed by the roar of the exhaust at start up? If not, does anyone know the name of the movie that starts like that?

reply

Yes! That is "Grand Prix"!
I remember how stunned I was by that scene when I saw "Grand Prix" as a high school kid in '67. And after all of these years "Grand Prix" is still the biggest thrill I have ever gotten in the movies.

It remains a terrific opening. We see a black screen, hear the intro music, and then with the roar of the engines starting, the camera pulls back from the inner darkness of an exhaust pipe that is now revving.

It still gives me a thrill and there were no extraordinary special effects involved, just a little "trick photography" based on an inspired visual idea.

reply

Yes, yes, yes.....the whole opening with the mutiple shots...
I love this movie...I can't wait for the DVD so I can stop babying my letterbox, two tape, VHS version.
