I Have The New DVD !!!

I bought it online and it arrived yesterday.
Didnt expect it so soon as the release date is today.

Spent about an hour with it so far and I can tell you it blows away the VHS tapes both in sound, clarity of picture and presentation. Even starts with the 5 minute overature played in some theaters.

I have found only one nit to pick and it may be due to my equipment but the two rear surround channels are quite weak in volume. I can compensate, others may not be able too. Nonetheless, sound is suberb.

Havent had time to watch any of the special features yet except for the theatrcal trailer. That didnt seem enhanced in any way but still interesting.

One question. Inside my case was only the 2 disks. No flyer, usual program material or anything at all. Id be interested in knowing if I got shortchanged or if all are like this.

The first disc says "The Movie" and the second disc says "Special Features", but the film is actually spread across both discs for the highest bitrate.

The picture is really awesome, but I don't the laserdisc or VHS to compare it too, but as go2madmax pointed out barely any surround activity, and that was a little disappointing. It is 40 years old, however, so the sound is really dated to today's standards. And I haven't had the chance to watch the special features yet, so I can not comment on those. But all in all well, worth the wait

All I got, in addition to the disks, was a flyer for the Jim Russell Driving School, offering a discount due to the film anniversary. I'm too old, fat and broke, and long since outgrew the fantasy... but it's a heck of a marketing ploy in the right hands.

My system doesn't have surround anyway, so can't comment on that, but the quality of the video is so far past the VHS... and it looks like they've gone back perhaps to the full theatrical cut as there are some brief frames in here I don't recall seeing in recent years, and the flow seems a bit better.

All in all... WOW. I can safely say I'm not sleeping tonight.

I did not get the Russell flyer. Not that I am able to attend but it would be nice to keep with the DVD. Word has it Garner trained there for the film.

Wow, I remember the Jim Russell school when I used to 'live' at Snetterton.

Just picked it up this weekend. It looks and sounds great on my end.

I'm playing mine today. The picture is outstanding, but the sound seems to be basically concentrated in the front. It seems like they have not been able to locate some decent sound masters. The original Cinerama seven channel stereophonic sound would be a really awesome experience, which is why it won Oscars for its sound design. If one saw it in the theatre, one would always remember that during the credits, right before the words "Grand Prix" appeared in the tailpipe, the screen remained black and one could hear the sound of an engine in the rear of the theatre. The engine sound then travelled from the rear, around the audience and then centered on the screen as you came out of the tailpipe. A memorable sound effect. I agree that there are some extra shots but still, the primary shot at the front of the starting line in Monaco is still missing. The tiny multiple screens dissolved into a black grid in front of that single starting line view. The grid dissolved as the cars started up and headed toward the camera. The camera moved backwards making the audience physically move backward into their seat. It was a great physical effect to notice in oneself and the rest of the audience. Still, it is the greatest racing movie of all time.
