How did Frankenheimer do the...

***SPOILER AHEAD***

...scene with the exhaust piece falling off and going straight down the Monza banking and hitting the Ferrari?

Anybody ever read anything about how it was done? In today's world, I wouldn't think twice about it because I'd know it was CGI.

I wonder if they experimented with a rearward shot from the camera car, dropping a piece of exhaust from a certain point on the banking until they knew exactly how far back the Ferrari should be in order for the piece to hit it.

Your explination at the end sounds very plausable to me. I can't remember if there was a cut between it falling off and it hitting the Ferrari. They might have just had a car in front of the Ferrari out of frame with a guy chucking a pipe at the Ferrari.

I'm wondering the same thing when I saw the scene.
