TCM edit?

While watching the film again on TCM last week, I noticed an audio cut during the scene in the Monza pits.As Sarti waits for his car to arrive late , he tells Louise " I have seen this happen before, to other drivers who have fallen from grace".The phrase "fallen from grace" is cut out of the audio, the film itself is not cut, just the words are deleted as Sarti speaks.
Also, while watching later in the film, when Barlini comes into the pits responding to the black flag, Senoir Manetta's answer to him about Jean- Pierre is also missing ( or not audible).
Anyone else notice this?

I saw it on TCM on friday and I noticed this. TCM never edits their movies, so I thought it was some type of screw up, but I guess not since it has happened before. BTW, thanks for telling me what he actally said. LOL

reply

Yes, thanks. I assumed Sarti's words were too profane for TCM or something. Maybe it was a glitch in the film or something.

In my memory of viewing the film, the line was intact, or enough of it was heard to carry the meaning, but...

If the audio of the "seen this happen before with drivers who have fallen from grace" line WAS silenced in the original print, it may possibly have been done in order not to offend Enzo Ferrari -- very much alive at the time of the filming, and obviously portrayed by Adolfo Celi, even though the character is named "Agostini Manetta" -- and the Ferrari organization.

Although he is seen to be upset by the delay of his car to the track, an obviously stated inference by Ferrari's star driver that "Manetta" or his company would be so vindictive as to purposely delay it's delivery to punish a driver who had "fallen from grace" would present a very negative picture of the real Ferrari and his organization, one Frankenheimer may have removed to avoid offending both (or so it would seem to me).

Just a thought...

Ferrari has always treated their drivers like crap. Just tools to win races.
I'd read that Enzo had no interest in this film, when first approached. But after seeing how well it was being filmed and presented, he embraced it.
I remember the 'fallen' line, maybe from the original.

"again on tcm last week." - four years on tcm still shows this. but that's nothing for tcm i supose. this was a real soul tickler to me, made me want to pick out one of those old racing games for n64, but i just can't quit the wrestling game. i think i'm gonna play one of those racing or rally games now, you can tell me what the movie ends like.

in the deep night,
there was engines and noice around,
as i walked out in the sunlight,
there was a tractor in my bush about to be torn down,
someone said they got the right to what they do,
and we're gonna ruin your drivein too,
i can't get a break,
what i have to take,
in a burgelary plan down town,
the alarm went off and it's all on tape now,
the companions brought a mask to everyone but i,
can't get a break,
why am i being treated this way,
birthday party and there is her,
i want to play a videogame with this girl,
just as her daddy say, come on we're getting late,
and her mother ate up my entire birthday cake,
i can't get a break,
same story every day.

Jean pierre Sarti goes over the Monza banking and gets killed after an exhaust pipe comes off someones race car. Pete Aron wins the world championship.

I watched GRAND PRIX today on my cable service on-demand TCM channel. The phrase 'fallen from grace' is missing from the audio as you describe, but is present in the closed-captioning...
