Georgy + Meredith -- Roommates or Sisters?

I've seen this film several times and was always under the impression that Georgy and Meredith were sisters, but all the reviews I've read say that they were roommates. Were they sisters? Thanks!

Roommates who met at the boarding school that Georgy was lucky enough to go to with the help of her parents' boss. They were both musicians.

James Mason's character makes mention of his disapproval of the people/friends Georgy was running around with. I believe they were indeed roomies.
