Georgy's Father Ted

Georgy's father Ted is a strange character. Did he not realize his employer James' intentions toward his daughter?? It seems so in the early part of the film even though James is married and as old as Ted, why else was he encouraging Georgy to "be nice" to him, go to his parties, etc. When Georgy offers to show him the "mistress contract" James has drawn up he refuses to even look at it as if knowing what it might be. And yet later in the film after James' wife death James and Ted get drunk and talk and laugh and Ted actually talks in ridicule about his overweight, plain daughter saying no one will ever find her attractive, it seems obvious here he does not know James is lusting after her.

Ted was the wrecking ball on Georgy's psyche and the reason she was such a doormat and so insecure. He would have cheerfully farmed his daughter out to his boss as her mistress and she knew it.

I had a hard time liking this movie. Her dad was awful, Georgy was a doormat, Meredith was plain nasty...it just didn't do it for me. But at least "dear old dad" explains why Georgy was a mess.

That's right. He was such an a-hole.
