Lyrics to title song (***May contain spoilers***)

In case anyone is interested...

Opening theme:

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Swinging down the street so fancy free
Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there (Inside you).

Hey there, Georgy Girl.
Look at all the boyfriends you don't get
Never had a real one yet
Just look at the clothes you wear

You're always window shopping, but never stopping to buy
Just shed those dowdy feathers and fly (A little bit).

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Give yourself a treat like most girls do
Get another hairstyle, too, and oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see
A new Georgy Girl

(bridge)

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Dreaming of the someone you could be
Life is a reality
You can't always run away.

Don't be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself.
It's time for jumping down from the shelf. (A little bit)

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Give yourself a chance and you'll succeed
Confidence is all you need, and oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see
A new Georgy Girl
(repeat to fade)

Closing theme:

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Pretty as a picture, told you so
Can it be the Georgy we all know or somebody new? (I wonder)

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Hurrying away to celebrate
Got yourself a man, but wait,
There's somebody else for you

Who needs a perfect lover when you're a mother at heart?
That's all you wanted right from the start. (Well, didn't you?)

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Now that you're no longer on the shelf
Better try to smile and tell yourself that you got your way. (You've made it)

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Now you've got a future planned for you
Though he's not a dream come true, at least he's a millionaire
So don't despair
You're rich, Georgy Girl
(repeat to fade)

By the way, the lyrics from the single that we hear on radio and on albums are different.

Single version:

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Swinging down the street so fancy free
Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there (Inside you).

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don't try
Or is it the clothes you wear?

You're always window shopping, but never stopping to buy
So shed those dowdy feathers and fly (A little bit).

Hey there, Georgy Girl
There's another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide, and oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see
A new Georgy Girl

(bridge)

Hey there, Georgy Girl
Dreaming of the someone you could be
Life is a reality
You can't always run away.

Don't be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself.
It's time for jumping down from the shelf. (A little bit)

Hey there, Georgy Girl
There's another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide, and oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see
A new Georgy Girl
Wake up, Georgy Girl
Come up, Georgy Girl
Wake up, Georgy Girl

If ever a song reminds me of the 60's, it's this one....and "Going up the country" Yes, I know they are very different songs, but they evoke certain memories of the era

reply

Needs a spoiler- now I know how the films ends, I think. :0)

But yes...sooooo 60s. I feel like I am back in HS and trying to dig up 79 cents for a single. (I'll skip lunch for a week.)

Thank you for posting these! I copied all sets years ago, but mislaid them. Does anyone recall a trailer for this film, where Lynn Redgrave ( as Georgy ) is actually sitting on a shelf, waving at the camera, then jumping down? I recall it.

When I didn't see it again, since I saw it broadcast in syndication on my local channel's afternoon movie in the 1970s, I wondered. It needs to be posted on You Tube, if available.

There's something from this great film on YouTube, well, at least the titles and music at the beginning of the film. Next to that I could also find clips from The Seekers.

Well done with the lyrics. BTW, they were written by Jim Dale, a popstar and actor who, at the time, appeared mainly in Carry-On films. The song/lyric was nominated for an Oscar.

Thanks for taking the time to share. What a great movie...and a great song.

Thank you for posting these. I think the radio lyrics are better. The movie lyrics almost seem a bit nasty and cynical, suggesting changes in appearance ("Get another hairstyle too/Could it be the clothes you wear?"), why can't people love Georgy for who she is? And the ending of the song in the movie is very different, despite the happy tone of the song. (I saw the great clip on YouTube too).

reply

Transitional lyrics are a common trope from the time period, also act as bookends.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this device also act as a Greek chorus?

reply

In the closing lyrics, the third line should be: "Can it be the Georgy we all know or somebody new?"

reply

Thank you for the information. I have now made the correction. Thanks.

What an absolutely horrible song, a faux-sophisticated, literal minded piece of hippie-dippie rubbish.
