Why did she kill herself in the end?? (Spoilers)

I am talking about Madame Butterfly, of course, but now I will discuss Georgy Girl.

The ending was subtle, and I had trouble reconciling the position of James. He made a face that suggested he felt cheated or left out to the final situation. But then I reconsidered.... He did not look mad at Georgy for supplanting him in the wedding carriage. He knew that she wanted the baby so much, and that she would soon grow to love him. She had finished with flakes (Jos) and harpies (Merideth), and gained wisdom. James was just right for the well-grounded Georgy, and was confident things would work out. What originally looked like indifference on Georgy's part was merely relief that she finally made the "right" decision.

Does that really happen, growing to love somebody? I'm not sure it was the right decision.

I think it was the right decision, but in a roundabout way.

Georgy's priority is Sara, so I'd think that whether or not she grows to love Mr Leamington is immaterial. By marrying Mr Leamington, she'll be financially secure and able to care for Sara.

We don't know if she would grow to love him,and the purpose of marriage is not for financial security; in this case, to care for a child you adopt. Marriage is meant when you are already do love your partner.

I fell for it. Nice work on the prank spoiler :)

I fell for it, too :). A few minutes before seeing this thread title I wondered if this film would end like another film which came out around the same time, where one of the lead characters killed him/herself.

You are too funny! I love what you did in the subject line. Adding 'Spoilers' after it was the best. I laughed and laughed and laughed; and still laughing now 😁😁

In regards to the movie, I don't think James is right for Georgy and I doubt she'll come to love him. Well, she might come to care for him assuming he treats her well and makes no demands on her but it will be from a distance. I don't think she'll ever be in love with him.

You have to remember Georgy was running away from James and with all he had done for her throughout her life, she never developed any feelings for him; not fatherly or otherwise. When he presents her with the contract to become his mistress and kisses her there's no reaction. It's not like she's a cold, unfeeling prude either. She had the hots for Jos and was more than capable of showing affection towards him. She only accepts James' offer because it was the only way she could have Sara.

The look on James' face shows he knows where he stands; exactly where he was before. He's her husband but it's in name only and that's all it will ever be. Had she showed him the slightest bit of affection or gratitude in the car for 'rescuing' her I might think differently but she never even acknowledges him. Also, they are supposedly heading off on their honeymoon but she's got little Sara in hand and shows no sign of letting go. What does that tell you?
