Is this the earliest film to feature maser tanks? I mean the big dishes on the backs of trucks that shoot lightning-like energy.

It's an interesting question. I know I've seen them in a lot of "Godzilla" films, but I'm not sure where they made their first appearance. I thought I saw them first in "King Kong verse Godzilla", but I can't be certain.
shareThe first time laser cannons were used was in the 1957 film 'The Mysterians'. I haven't seen 'Battle in Outer Space' so there might be some in there. They used a different kind of laser cannon in the 1961 film 'Mothra' and then the maser cannons in 'War of the Gargantuas'. In 'Mothra vs Godzilla' they used a lightning generators on Godzilla, but those aren't really lasers. Also in 'Godzilla vs Monster Zero' they used powerful guns that didn't really fire rays, but were used to block magnetic waves and t appeared that they were firing rays. Hope this helped.

shareThe high-tech weapons are very nice, but they really need to work on those tanks. No wonder they're ineffective; in the close-ups I noticed that the tank commanders, sticking their heads out of the top hatches, were completely motionless, and for some reason had elected to paint their faces and uniforms the same green color as the tank they were riding in.
