Great movie, but .....

Pretty techie group to be able to shrink things so small. My question is why was such a crude communication media (morse code) used? Everything seemed so modern, the lab, the nuclear sub, etc., so the morse code seemed out of place.
Did I miss something?

In Isaac Asimov's novelization of the screenplay, it was explained that they used Morse code because of a problem transmitting voice across the miniaturization gap. Maybe if they'd used voice communication, the miniaturized crew would have sounded like the man-headed fly in The Fly.
