1966 Miniskirt... (Serious Question.)

In the beginning of the movie, when the girl meets the guy on the train or bus or whatever, she is wearing a skirt. It's not necessarily a "miniskirt," of course, but it is a skirt nonetheless. For 1966 -- while watching this movie -- would this be considered risque or "naughty"? What I mean is, in many futuristic movies, you always see really good-looking women wearing leather and techno-organic, close-fitting and futuristic clothing. It's usually very attractive and provocative and whatnot, so I was just wondering if that is what they were going for here in this scene, so to speak.

Anyone got any clues to this? I'd really like to know, because they would most likely have to kind of hide that sort of thing subtly if it was done this way at all...

Though just a wee lad at the time, I can confirm that women's skirts were getting delightfully VERY short during that era, i.e. much easier for pre-pubescent pervs to get a peek at the mysterious "goods", lol.

But in reality, the miniskirts were worn only by (thankfully) young (college age) single women, and never in any serious work environment. Virtually no husbands or bosses of that era would allow it. Kind of a short-lived fad, IIRC.

As far as being risque' for the period released (vs. the future period depicted), not so much... esp. compared to Julie Christie's shocker the year before, 'Darling'. I mean, hey, look at the miniskirts in the original Star Trek episodes, and that was kid's TV.

There was also a brief period of much more risque' releases right after WW2... but the censors clamped down.

"and men have NEVER told their wives what to wear"

You must be young, because men DO tell women what not to wear. If they're in a relationship, of course. Any woman who dresses like a slut while in a serious relationship either won't be in one for long or is with a guy who, obviously, doesn't care about her (or loylaty) that much at all -- so he's probably cheating on her anyway.

Thank you for your answer/analysis. That helps me.

Also of the era were hot pants and short shorts, and no they were NOT worn only by young women, but there were significantly fewer women who would wear them if they didn't look attractive. Flabby women tended to dress more in 'Omar the tentmaker' garb.

This was a fairly typical length of skirt for young women in 1966 and would not have been considered risque.
