The Ending ( Spoiler kind of )

Something that bothered me they set a Gunfight that never happed.
Jess Remsberg ( James Garner ) is looking for the man who Killed his wife... a nobel Quest. He risk his life to find the answer while trying to save The Boxed in Calvery... another Nobel Quest. He battles the "Bad Law Man" to find the answer and then when he has the answer goes back with the Calvery to save the Boxed in Calvery. His last confertation with the Man who killed his wife he never gets to have the final duel. Kind of a let down don't you think?

That being said this was one of the better Drama Westrens I have seen with an all star cast

James Garner .... Jess Remsberg (scout)

Sidney Poitier .... Toller (contract horse dealer)
Bibi Andersson .... Ellen Grange

Dennis Weaver .... Willard Grange (Fort Creel freighter)

Not really a letdown. The punishment handed to the man who killed his wife was much worse than Remsberg could have done with a final duel.

I really liked this film and the relationships that developed. Music is a little too modern/upbeat, but it all comes together nicely.

I agree with you and the Music. The Indians had the better Music background. Yes the Punishment was worse then anything that Remsberg would of handed out. Of course the Man who murderd Remsburgs wife would be no match even if he was healthy.

garner's quest is what keeps him going but along the way he finds his love for bibi is more important than revenge. the ending sets up the idea bibi and jim can ride off with a clean slate. for him it's understanding what she went through, and her understanding will's death was an act of mercy rather than to get him out of the way so she could go with jim. as bad as will treated her, if not for her son, she'd have stayed with will if he hadn't died

1)I liked the music.
2)I think the writer stayed away from a final showdown between James Garner and his wife's killer in order to construct a scenario in which the killer had to beg for mercy from Garner.
3) I like this movie. But it is one of so many in which a white man takes an Indian wife and the wife dies. Anyone know of a movie in which a marriage between a white man and Indian lasts through the closing credits?

Yeah what is up with that? I can think of so many films that result in the Indian brides death.

In Broken Arrow 1950 the hero's wife dies.

In The Last Wagon Comanche Todd's Comanche wife and children were murdered.

In White Feather 1955 there is an interracial happy ending.

In the Indian Fighter 1955 the white hero and his Sioux girl friend apparently live happily ever after.
