How did the Grinch get the doggy? He owned the dog but the dog helped him with all his evil plans. It was such a sweet doggy, how did the two of them ever get paired up? Why wouldn't the doggy have just run away from him?
Dogs are, by nature, submissive creatures; they tend to obey their masters no matter what. A cat is more of a free-thinker; if the Grinch had had a cat as a pet, the animal probably would not have put up with all that Grinch crapola for a minute and would have run away.
Yes but it seems sort of strange that they were paired together. If the grinch was the dog's master then the dog would have picked up on the grinch traits. But instead he was a sweet little doggy. I just thought it was a weird match.
As I get older, I tend not to see the Grinch as such an evil figure. When you get right down to it, what the Grinch hates about Christmas are the same things many people say they don't like about it, too...that it's gotten so commercialized. He hates the noise, the shopping, and the focus on gifts. When the Who's are happy even when he's stolen everything, the first things he thinks about are gifts; "it came without packages, boxes or bags". It's when he finally understands the real meaning of Christmas (largely because the Who's themselves seem to get it), he changes.
So, I tend to see the Grinch as sour, but probably not a totally bad guy as long as he's left alone. During the rest of the year, he and Max probably get along just fine.
I guess even an mean sour grouchy ole grinch needs a sweet doggie. I just love the part where the Grinch whistles for Max. Max, thinking he's going for a sleigh ride jumps onto the sleigh all happy and excited and the Grinch turns to the viewer(breaking the 4th wall) and does a great slowburn.
I guess how Max came to be with him went something like this, he wanders onto his property as a puppy during a blizzard and he takes him in and over time slowly begins to warm up to him.
I love Max, one of the great underappreciated cartoon doggies! I think he's sweet and lovable largely to keep the story light in the scenes when Grinch is concocting his evil needs, little children might otherwise be scared during these segments without Max.
Most dogs are generally sweet and lovable. Dogs don't pick up master's traits, most mean dogs are owned by people who treat them well, these dogs simply don't like strangers or other people crossing their "turf".
