Amazing

What a great movie, and not because it has a fantastic cast, but because the story is damn good. I keep reading reviews that say it's 'disappointing' but I don't see how. I found it compelling from beginning to end, expertly written and performed. Maybe what people were disappointed by was the lack of big Oscar-bait speeches by most of the cast. Maybe they wanted to see their favorite stars showcased more than occurs in an ensemble piece like this. But I can't say that I felt the slightest disappointment. The plot builds in tension as a natural consequence of the characterizations. Nothing seems forced or out of place. Great movie imo.

I'm more mixed about it. It was a little like a soap-opera. I never could understand why everyone was so upset about Bubber escaping from jail and coming home. (By the way, I've never heard of someone nicknamed Bubber, Bubba yes) Unless I missed something what was he going to do? Burn the town down? He didn't seem like a dangerous guy. Redford looks like an escapee from a prep school. Plus a lot of folks in their 30s and 40s hanging outside drinking like they were teenagers didn't seem realistic. Brando was great with what he had to work with and the ending where he gets beat up reminded me of Waterfront. I didn't like the Jack Ruby Lee Harvey Oswald killing either. Seemed out of place and the writer was badgering us to make their point. If E.G Marshall and Brando had framed Bubber so that Jane Fonda could marry his son then it may have been more interesting to me.

Completely unamazing. I give it a 3/10. What a waste of a great cast. The biggest blunder here was the failed attempt to integrate a small Texas town with the swinging 60's suburban life. A town with that type of downtown would not have that big a population for one thing, nor one tuned into the 60's counter culture mixed with red neck, gun toting, racist ways. The two did not go together. Then there were the horrible fight scenes, cornball acting, and red paint used for blood. The depiction of law enforcement was ridiculous. Brando was not into anything but his paycheck in this one.
