Robert Duvall and Brando -blatant scene stealing.

I watched this film recently and realised that this was the first time that Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall worked together, and not The Godfather.

There is a scene where Calder/Brando is cleaning his shoes whilst, Edwin/Duvall is trying to explain his fear of Bubber Reeves played by Redford. I thought that Brando was stealing the scene, by having his back to Duvall, whilst brushing his shoes. The viewer is then forced to focus on Brando rather than Duvall's performance.

I recall reading Trevor Howard having similar problems with Brando.

That was the point. Brando was disrespectful to his character as he should have been. Duvall was a milquetoast and a secondary character. It was Brando's scene and not a confrontation of equals.
