The whole town is shaking in its boots because Bubba is out and most likely coming back to settle some old scores. Ok, that's fine, but Redford as Bubba? It made me laugh...he's so soft and cute. I think he was horribly miscast in this one. Would have been better to use Duvall instead.
Redford would have definitley fit the role of the well-bred and well-off Jake Rogers better than that of Bubber, and would definitely have been more in his element than James Fox was. But Robert probably wanted to prove his acting skill and versatility by taking on the convict role. His performance is good and convincing enough for me, but his appeaance sure isn't. Sure, his clothes are appropriately filthy and ragged for those of a man who has supposedly trampled in all kinds of dirty and muddy terrain (and swam in a river to boot), but just look at the man's head! Bubber is supposedly on the run a third night by the film's end, yet Redford is clean shaven to the very end and his hair is ever so tidy and neatly combed (though a lock does become dislodged as Bubber meets his fate in the penultimate scene). I personally blame Arthur Penn for not seeing to such noticeable discrepancies since whoever was in charge of continuity was apparently too incompetent to notice. I expected more from the likes of him.
I'm here, Mr. Man, I cannot tell no lie and I'll be right here till the day I die
When Anna and Jake first go looking for the Redford character toward the end of the movie they go to one of the old haunts that the three of them frequented and inside there is a piece of wood with all three names burned into it. The names are Anna, Jake and Bubbe(r). The "r" is not clear, but there is something burned into the wood after the "e." It sounded to me like Anna was calling him Bubba though.
