This is more than 40 years old...
...and it's STILL vastly superior to both "Flyboys" and "Der Rote Baron"!
How come no other production since has been able to make a film about WW1 air combat, and get it right?

Not only does the movie hold up well, but it was made 48 years after the year (1918) it depicted, and now 48 years have passed since the movie was made.
Doesn't matter. There's no audience now for a WWI aviation film regardless of how well it's made. At least not for a large budget theatrical release.
shareI'm not sure that is true. This one could be iffy, but with the right cast and the right marketing, it could do well. I was only 8 when this came out, so I don't recall how well it was received, but I think it was somewhere in the middle.
That said, I vote no remake. I prefer to see the originals and we can easily these days.
Agreed - a great movie! One of the best WWI movies ever. I love the fighter pilots and planes of that era of chivalry and honor ; wish there were more films of that genre.
