I think this is quite under-rated

I saw this movie and was kinda shocked that this brilliant film with a good plot and wonderful acting is so less known. George Peppard was good and Andress was looking awesome. Moreover, its far better than war movies of today which mainly put in special effects which make it look so dramatic and fake. This movie looked very true to life.

Agreed!

My accountant says, "1 + 1, 40% of the time, equals divorce".

I think it's rating is just about right. It allows for superior films and their better ratings to actually count for something.

With that said, I've always liked this film from the first time I saw it, till today. Peppard was very good, as was Mason and the rest of the cast. Ursula was easy to look at for sure.

Way down deep I'm very superficial.

The internet has made idiots out of half the population, and the ratings for this movie are absolute proof.

Check the list of absurd "goofs", seriously??? Anyway, I'm glad some others agree.

The only "goof" I noticed... ad nauseum... was that the German, British and American infantrymen were all using the same British SMLE (Short Magazine Lee-Enfield) rifles. The rest of the uniforms and equipment looked very authentic!

Underrated? I don't know why it wasn't nominated for BEST PICTURE! I certainly would have voted for it over the other insipid, boring nominees that year.

James Mason for Best Supporting Actor! The rest were great, probably due to the Director who also deserved a nomination.

Jerry Goldsmith for best musical score. It's fantastic! The music really seems to capture the grandeur and the shock of aerial combat.

Best Costuming!

Special award for the aerial photography!

The photography overall is masterful.

I can't praise THE BLUE MAX highly enough. It's got to be my favorite war movie.
