I'm going to make a 'cut' of this film removing the 'funny' ending.
(The spoiler tags are probably pointless, as I suspect everyone reading that has already seen the movie; but I'll include them nonetheless.)
Instead of the film revealing that the whole game was a confidence scam, it should have ended with Jason Robards' character;s advice to the kid (who then shinnies out the window and rides off, escaping a marriage-from-Hell). He was actually the wisest, most interesting character in the film at that point; and the film would have closed on a dramatic high note.
Instead it went with goofy fluff for cheap laughs at the end, and shamelessly rips off "The Sting". IMO, it's why the film has dwindled into obscurity.
