Who died in a pond? (Criterion DVD's essay)

The essay on the insert that comes with the DVD said the 2 protagonists in this film one died on the hillside (the donkey) and the other died "in a pond" (Marie???). What is it talking about? Nothing has been said about what happened to Marie in the film.

Was the essay specifically referring to this film or to Bresson films in general? I immediately thought of a protagonist in another Bresson film who does indeed die in a pond.

It's a reference to Mouchette, which Quandt mentions at the beginning of the paragraph and contrasts Au hasard Balthasar with.
