What does the title mean?

I thought of "chosen-by-lot Balthazar", is that close enough?

"By Chance Balthazar" I believe, can't remember the source but I think it ties in with the idea of fate involving Balthazar and Marie

"By Chance, Balthazar" or "At Random, Balthazar" are the two closest English translations. Probably referring to the randomness of the series of circumstances or situations in someone's life. Bresson also liked the rhyme and rhythm of the sound of saying, "Au hasard, Balthazar" as he states in the TV interview included on the Criterion disc.
