A 'existentialist' question spoiler about the end

Yeah, I really love this film, but i got a existentialist question about the donkey; his name is Balthazar as well as he gives his name to the movie title, but, at the end when the donkey dies, does the donkey dies in real life? or just in the film?

I think it's just in the film, you can still see him breathing if you watch closely
