Most American moviegoers will not go to a movie with subtitles. Would this film become more popular if it was re-filmed with an English-speaking cast? Keeping the same style and editing as in the original.

I don't think subtitles are necessarily as off-putting to Americans as one might think. Look how people flocked--no pun intended--to see "The Passion of the Christ". If the subject matter and casting compels them, I think there will be an audience. What I'm not so sure about is how you'd market a film like this were it to be remade (it wouldn't do to have families accidentally stumble upon it thinking it was a fun animal movie for the kids). More than anything, I hate remakes. If people can't be bothered to seek out the original I see no reason to update, alter, and repackage it for them.

Great idea! I saw this in my dream: Peter Jackson could direct it. I see Scarlett Johannson as Marie. They would get Eddie Murphy to supply the voice of Balthazar.

there is some movies impossible to remake there is remake for Psyco in 1998 step by step but it was flop.
movies like citizen kane,2001:space ,Au hasard Balthazar,zerkalo ,the seventh seal can't remake for ever or maybe in heaven.
Go ahead and remake it if you like. Don't expect any of us to watch it or care. I'm sure nobody on here gives a damn about *beep* american movies.

Without Bresson's style? No way. And who cares if most American moviegoers won't see these films? Let them watch The Avengers and eat popcorn. Leave the masterpieces of world cinema alone instead of dumbing things down for the masses.

shareI usually re-read this post after a few beers when I am very bored and have watched all of the pirated movies and catch-up TV and done the company spreadsheet book cooking. I have considered the question for many years and now believe that the original Bresson film is best kept as is, but re-dubbed with Eddie Murphy as the donkey. Will Ferrell should have a vocal part but I am not so sure which.
shareNo, definitely not. I dislike remakes in general. A film should be seen and heard in its original language. When it's remade in English it loses something. If you don't speak the language, just read the subtitles.
