I don't think subtitles are necessarily as off-putting to Americans as one might think. Look how people flocked--no pun intended--to see "The Passion of the Christ". If the subject matter and casting compels them, I think there will be an audience. What I'm not so sure about is how you'd market a film like this were it to be remade (it wouldn't do to have families accidentally stumble upon it thinking it was a fun animal movie for the kids). More than anything, I hate remakes. If people can't be bothered to seek out the original I see no reason to update, alter, and repackage it for them.
