Have there been any TV shows similar to "The Monkees"?

Have there been any television shows similar to "The Monkees"? There was the short lived "New Monkees", of course. The only other one I can think of is the '80s English show "The Young Ones". It reminded me a little of the first season of "The Monkees". Both shows featured four young men sharing an apartment with an unofficial leader named Mike. Each episode of "The Monkees" featured at least one song. And most episodes of "The Young Ones" had a musical guest performing.

The Guys Next Door. It was like The Monkees and aired Saturday mornings in the 1990s. I'm good friends with one of them. Their videos and clips are on YouTube. The show had a very Monkees feel to it. Sight gags, some mini fake commercials and always a music video.

I'm not familiar with "The Guys Next Door," but there was another Saturday morning show in 1976 called "The Kids from C.A.P.E.R." which was similar to "The Monkees." Don Kirshner was one of the executive producers. Coincidence?

IMDb gives this plot summary:

Live-action Saturday morning comedy/adventure series. Every episode featured a musical number, numerous self-referential and "fourth wall" jokes, and a love interest for one of the primary characters. C.A.P.E.R. stands for the "Civilian Authority to Protect Everybody Regardless."

I see that there are clips of this show on YouTube if you want to check it out.

There was also The New Monkees. Anyone remember them? I think they had a short lived tv show.

reply

Yes I do remember that. I don't think it did very well. I remember seeing it on a local syndicated channel. I remember the music being very synth pop/rock.

The Partridge Family, Scooby-Doo and the Archies are all derivative of the Monkees,

At the mention of The Archies I remembered a spin off of The Flintstones. Pebbles and Bambam. They had a band. I remember watching this in the 80s too.

I'll throw out one more Saturday morning show: The Banana Splits Adventure Hour.

My suspicions are confirmed by these comments in the Wikipedia article on The Banana Splits:

Each show represented a meeting of the "Banana Splits Club", and the wraparounds featured the adventures of the club members, who doubled as a musical quartet, meant to be reminiscent of The Monkees.

They all spoke in English – Drooper with a Southern drawl in the manner of Michael Nesmith, ...
