Cracked magazine parody
I became a big fan of The Monkees in the summer of 1986, when MTV was showing a marathon of their shows. A little later, I watched "Monkee Junkee Saturday" on Nickelodeon.
I think it was around this time when I started buying "16" magazines, especially with The Monkees in it. One magazine I bought, though, was Cracked magazine, with a parody of The Monkees called, The Donkees.
It introduced Mike as "Meek Nessmess", and said that people were wondering why he was wearing that stupid knit hat in the middle of summer in California.
All through the strip, it talked about them being replaced by The New Donkees. At the end, "Meek" dumps Liquid Paper/White out on them, erasing them, saying that they didn't need these New Donkees!
That was one stupid idea, wasn't it? That went over well with the Star Trek franchise, but don't go messing around with The Monkees. I don't really remember, but I don't think the group lasted all that long.
You can find this and other Cracked magazines here: Doug Sulip's Comic World at [email protected] email him first as he may be out of business.
