Depends on what mood I'm in. For today, I'll go with "Too Many Girls".
It's one of the funnier episodes. It opens with the boys playing Steppin' Stone live for a few seconds (I really wish they did more stuff like that on the show). The entire Amateur Hour is fantastic.
I wish they'd put the uncensored version on DVD and Blue Ray (YouTube it).
I also always liked, "The Monkees in Paris." I liked how it was mainly instrumental and not much dialouge. And they picked some killer songs from the Pisces, Aquarius album too.
Totally agree with you there. Monkees in Paris is a great one. The music, the girls, the Eiffel Tower, the score, the cemetery halt, etc.
And I especially love the camera work during the beautiful song "Don't Call on Me". I always thought of that was sort of a prelude to the camera work during "As We Go Along" in Head.
I have two favorites: Monkee Mother and The Christmas show.
Monkee Mother-I thought it was sweet how during the song, Sometime in the Morning, they fantasize that Millie has turned into a beautiful young blonde woman, they're dressed in gentleman's clothes that looked like from another time, and are dancing with her. I was 10 years old when I first heard of The Monkees; I used to cry every time I heard that song. I don't know if it was from the song, or the fact that time travel wasn't possible. I'd go and see them.
There is a goof in this one. Millie is a redhead. They picked a blonde to play the younger version.
The Christmas Show-I loved how Melvin learned his lesson at the end of the show and how he fantasized how great a time he would have had with the boys if he hadn't been such a Scrooge. A Christmas carol is one of my favorite movies. I loved the song at the end. I think it was called, Rui Chui; they played an instrumental version of the song at points in the show.
I'm shocked to see that "Monkees Mother" is a favorite of anyone but me. It's not typical Monkees mayhem & comparably tame, with subdued tunes. But it's always been my favorite episode. To be fair, I was never (I'm 63) much of a fan of their music (except for Michael's stuff) but always loved the zany show. I just find the episode to be sweet, showing a kind and sensitive side of the boys. Rose Marie was the perfect choice for this character.
Monkee Mother is a great episode. The music alone makes this one a classic. Sometime in the Morning, Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow, and Peter and Mike strumming Don't Call On Me is fantastic.
Love Peter's comment about Southeast Asia while toppling the dominos.
Rose Marie along with her "birds", Martin and Lewis, contribute a lot of heart to this one.
