I watched this a few days ago and really loved this two parter. Everybody really shined in this episode I thought. This was also an example of why I really like Peter graves so much in this series. The way he played the part of the evil and abusive, murderous slave trader. I do kind of question the whole scenario with the kidnapping of the wife and all and the swapping with her and Cinnamon. I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on it. After it was all revealed and Jim said to her at the end "I'm sorry but this was the only way". I'm not sure I buy that. Would the wife and the brother not have believed them if they told them what was going on right off the bat and found a much easier way to play the whole thing out? Yeah the guy was family and all, but it was clear that they had their doubts about the whole slave thing from the beginning. That's why they were there to begin with. To make sure there weren't any slaves. By the way, that scene with the bats really freaked me out. That's a phobia of mine. I hate those creatures!
It's been a year or two since I watched these episodes, but what I remember most vividly is guest star Antoinette Bower. Forgive my obviously sexist observations, but I have to wonder if she was cast because she filled out a nightgown as nicely as Barbara Bain. Both are very attractive women. No disrespect intended.
After brief research here on IMDB, I found out that The Slave was broadcast the during same month and year as Ms. Bower appeared as Sylvia in the Catspaw (Halloween) episode of Star Trek the original series. Were there bats in that one? 😃 Hard to believe it was the same actress. I found her so unattractive and unappealing in that role. That's a sign of a good actress!
The Slave script was written by the Woodfield/Balter team who usually penned great episodes based around "the con." This plot certainly was true to their form, based on a con game but still had major plot holes, as you mentioned jayhn1111. Performances by Peter Graves, Ms. Bower, and the rest of the M:I cast saved a less than stellar script.
Wow was that her?? I honestly didn't even realize that was the same person since she looked so different in that one. I didn't really find her attractive in Catspaw either to be honest. It's been several years since I saw catspaw, but I don't think there were any bats in that one thankfully lol. I didm 't realize that it aired the same month as the mission episode. It is interesting to find out about all the connections between those two shows being they're both my top favorites.
I have to agree with Lima on this one. Any faults in the plot I can overlook because Miss Bower looks fantastic, especially in a nightgown. And Miss Bain is no slouch herself. I guess for those 2 reasons it's actually a well written episode. BTW, Antoinette Bower appears 2 more times and one of them as a guest agent for the IM force.
I was trying to respond to jahyn1111's OP, but I seem to be on a new thread. I really liked The Slave.
I think one of the reasons the IMF didn't tell the prince and his wife what the plan was is because they needed there reaction to be spontaneous.
For instance, when the prince is being driven to the auction, he is genuinely surprised to see that the cars belong to rulers of neighboring countries and friends of his family there.
Next, seeing his wife on the auction block was the final straw that the king was guilty. Even if you're pretty sure that your brother was selling slaved, you really wouldn't think he would sink so low as to sell his own sister-in-law!
They probably weren't told because their acting inexperience might have accidentally would ruin the mission.
That's a good point that you made. There was that scene when the Prince and Princess were getting ready to go to sleep, and the Princess told her husband that regardless of the lack of evidence, the only way to ensure that slavery was no longer practiced in El Kabir was to overthrow the King.
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, cind5! I loved Dr. Strange! Of course, I'd love watching Benedict Cumberbatch standing on a stage reading from the phone book!
I liked the plot. I think that it did a good job introducing the character to anyone who wasn't familiar with him. The special effects were very cool.
Mads Mikkelsen was good, but I think he should stay away from playing bad guys who have eye problems for a while. I kept expecting him to suggest to Strange that they settle their differences over a game of poker.
Only thing that annoyed me was Benedict's American accent. It was good, but he sounded EXACTLY like Hugh Laurie does when he's doing an American accent.
Yes, he does. A lot of the moviegoers have basically mentioned Hugh Laurie. I personally don't mind, because I love Hugh Laurie and I loved House (except for the last two seasons and don't get me started on the series finale).
