Fireplace elevator?

Why Scanlon always used the secret fireplace elevator when he had to visit Reid?
Couldn't he just stop by and use the front door?
I don't really see the point of Scanlon secretly having to enter the house, since both men didn't have any publicly known connection to the Hornet

And if the fireplace was downstairs, where did the elevator go?
Scanlon would enter through the roof, like Santa?

Scanlon did openly attend Britt's birthday party ("Hornet, Save Thyself") without seeming to raise any eyebrows, so that's a good point.

In some episodes, especially early, we see Scanlon park his car on a street, walk into an alley (the same one the Black Beauty reaches the street through), then push a board aside and slip through a doorway into a boarded up building. After this, he emerges from behind the fireplace. Presumably, Reid's townhouse is a split level job, and his den is lower than the alley-side ground.

Thnx, Britt :)

I don't remember the alley doorway or the actual show, since i was still a little kid at the time reruns of the show were aired here in Holland.
Also, kids didn't appreciate TGH, because it was too serious, unlike Batman, who fought more colorful villains instead of just gangsters

I got interested again after i heard about the upcoming movie with Seth Rogen.
I searched for a DVD box of the show, but only found the 2 movies, The Green Hornet and Fury of the Dragon.
I don't think there even is a region 2 DVD box of this show :(

These movies only show scenes of the fireplace elevator, not the alley doorway.
There's also a scene where Kato moves some fake books on the bookshelf.
I suppose this opened a doorway to the garage and the Black Beauty?

The books had something to do with raising the fireplace so Scanlon could enter--there would be a sound effect notifying Britt and Kato that Frank was arriving. The garage was the regular one. They would turn down the lights, then Kato would make clamps rise out of the floor and secure Britt's regular car, after which the floor would rotate, bringing up the Black Beauty, from which similar clamps would be removed. The controls for all these were disguised as tools on a wall board.

The only DVDs here in the USA are bootlegs, but with modern digital computer technology, they can make very professional-looking packaging. They tend to be labelled "special wide-screen edition" or something to that effect, which really means they've been cropped to remove channel logos.

The whole point of Scanlon using the elevator is that the DA visting the publisher of the Daily Sentinel every day would make the neighbors suspicious.

You're right. That's the answer to the OP's question. Good job.

Thanks. Had you any doubt?

Unfortunately, yes. I'm ashamed (but not unwilling) to admit that I had actually missed the real point. Forgot to say thanks for pointing it out to me.

The Green Hornet creator,George Trendle, who was a consultant to the TV show hated the fireplace secret passageway. He felt that D.A.Scanlon should simply come in via the front door.Producer of the TV show William Dozier disagreed. He thought that having Scanlon stopping by Britt's home too often would arouse suspicion as to what their meetings were about;that people might recognize Scanlon's car.I think that's a good point, why take any chances alerting others to the covert meetings between Scanlon & Britt & Kato? As for me,I thought the fireplace secret entrance/exit was very cool.Loved seeing Scanlon arrive & leave in it.Then again,I think secret panels are fantastic & I've always enjoyed seeing them in movies or on TV.Secret panels have been used on such TV shows as Zorro,The Munsters,The Wild,Wild West,The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,to name a few.

Yes. Gadgets were all the rage during the 60's thanks to the James Bond films. Dozier was heavily influneced by JB films...hence all the hi-tech gadgets in the Black Beauty. In the original "Green Hornet" serials the car was barely modified and it really did not have many features.

In the William Dozier produced failed "Dick Tracy" pilot of 1967, it featured Tracy descending into his basement 'crime lab' via a rotating elevator similar to the fireplace elevator in GH.
