I haven't seen this show since I was a kid, but I remember liking it a lot. I would watch this along with The Hulk and Batman and all those 60s and 70s superhero series.
But since I haven't seen it in so long, I'm wondering if it would still be worth watching? Unfortunately I can't watch Batman anymore, and most shows from this time period are just too campy.
I can't remember if this show was campy like the others or if it was done more seriously, can someone describe for me the general points of the show that might make it worth watching nowadays?
TGH was played seriously & did not copy the Batman TV series camp style at all in that regard. That is one of the reasons why fans such as myself continue to love TGH to this day. There are many positive aspects to TGH. The show was well cast & I liked all of them.Bruce Lee,as Kato,is stunning to watch in action with his martial arts moves as you would expect.Nobody like him was on any television show at that time. There were marvelous devices such as the Hornet Sting ultrasonic weapon & Hornet Gun that spewed a knockout gas.The Black Beauty sedan that TGH & Kato drove in on their cases was equipped with all sorts of weaponry such as rockets,Hornet Scanner, gas nozzle,to name a few.I wouldn't say that it was a perfect show although it'll always remain a favorite of mine. The half-hour format was limiting to both plot & character development. The villains were guys in suits, hardly colorful or intriguing as antagonists.I certainly did not wish to see TGH&K battle campy foes as was being done on Batman. However, intriguing adversaries along the lines of a Dr.No or Goldfinger featured in the James Bond films could have been created for TGH.Bruce Lee's Kato should have had much more screen time to fully display what this amazing man could do during action scenes.Give it a try & see what you think.
Everything you wrote is correct. I believe that the reason this show was cancelled after one season is because it was not campy. Batman was incredibly popular and this show tried to capitalize on that popularity but it did not have the humor or the over the top villains that made Batman so popular. People were expecting it to be like Batman and it wasn't. If the Green Hornet had come first, who knows what might have happened?
I think the fact that the tone of Batman and The Green Hornet were so different made the Batman GH crossover more ridiculous. If Batman fans tuned to Green Hornet based on that crossover they wold have been disappointed.
It would be like having Mission: Impossible do a crossover to Get Smart to draw more viewers for M:I.
